Analysis of Badminton Shots

Use the cropped videos and the bullet points that you researched yesterday to help analyse your own performance:

The Overhead Clear:

  1. -          Start with a wide sideways stance (non racket shoulder towards net) put racket up with L shaped arm (non racket arm raised for balance)
  2. -          Racket head placed behind back and put weight on racket (rear) leg
  3. -          Racket arm straightens, forearm rotates to contact shuttle above shoulder
  4. -          Racket arm follows through, racket leg transfers from rear to front body position

The Smash:

  1. -          Raise your racket arm and non-racket arm
  2. -          Take the shuttle at the highest point possible
  3. -          Hit the shuttle with a full arm swing
  4. -          Follow through with your swing

The Drop Shot:

  1. ·         Bring elbow upwards and forwards and extend the arm when reaching for the shuttle
  2. ·         As you hit the shuttle turn shoulders and body back into court
  3. ·         Elbow should be low and racket should be pointing in an upwards direction
  4. ·         Preparation is the same as the overhead clear except you must slow down the racket head on impact

The Flick Serve:

  1. ·         Stand facing the net with right foot in front of your left
  2. ·         Hold the badminton racket with a relaxed basic grip
  3. ·         Hold the shuttlecock by the tip of the 'feathers'
  4. ·         When hitting the shuttle turn your body and bring the badminton racket forwards with your elbow held in close to your side

Unit 14 - Exercise, Health & Lifestyle

Scenario/Background: You have started a new job as a health and fitness instructor. In your role you are expected to be able to advise clients about the importance of lifestyle factors and how these can have a significant impact upon a person’s health. You have decided to put a leaflet together about the effect of lifestyle upon health that you can give out to your clients to read at their leisure.

Task Breakdown
Write a blog to give to prospective clients.
 Introduction
Briefly outline who you are and why you have written the blog.
P1 Lifestyle Factors
Your leaflet should describe and explain these lifestyle factors:
  • physical activity
  • alcohol
  • smoking
  • stress
  • diet
It should describe how each of these factors affects a person’s health and wellbeing.
 M1
Any explanation of the effects of lifestyle factors should include short-term and long-term effects as well as suggest future implications to health and well being. Recommended levels of consumption should also be quoted and guidance offered to my alterations to the lifestyle factors
Below are links that may help with researching the various lifestyle factors:

3 Health & Safety Procedures at the John Warner Sports Centre

Now that you have notes from Tanya's talk about the procedures they use at the John warner Sports Centre, you should write these up in as much detail as possible.

You should pay particular attention to how the procedures are reviewed and assessed in order to reach the merit/distinction levels.

To hear a recording of the talk, click on the link below:

The 4 procedures that you should look at are:
Normal Operating Procedures (NOP)
Emergency Operating Procedures (EOP)
Swimming Pool Procedures
Fire Procedures

In order to achieve the higher marks in this task, you must explain the procedures in great detail, explain how the systems are reviewed by the sports centre and suggest alternative methods to improve current systems or how the procedures are reviewed.

Finally, I have scanned 2 of the COSHH forms they have for the soap in the toilets and for the chlorine they use in the pool:

Regulatory Bodies

For the final section of the first assignment, you need to describe the 'regulatory bodies that influence health and safety in sport'. Please describe the role and influence the following bodies have:

  • The Health and Safety Executive (HSE)
  • Local Authorities
  • Local Education Authorities
  • Police
  • National Governing Bodies of Sport
Screenshots of the diagrams from the 'Reading for this Unit' would help you to describe the bodies.

Assessing Risk in Sport - Task 1

Reading for this unit can be accessed in the following location:

W:\Physical Education\BTEC Sport\6 Form BTEC - Level 3\Single - Subsidiary Diploma\Unit 3 - Assessing Risk in Sport

You have been given the details of 9 different legislative factors that impact upon health and safety in sport. You must pick 4 to describe, compare and contrast. Try to choose those which you feel have a bigger impact on sport and use the following subtitiles to structure your writing on your blog entry:
  • Name of Legislation
  • Description of Legislation (when, why, whom, key features)
  • Impact on Sport (consider the impact in schools i.e. PE lessons or in a sports centre)
  • Case Study (a case study that demonstrates a link to sport will help you to achieve a 'merit')
Here is an example of what to write for the C.O.S.H.H. legislation:

Do not attempt M1 yet. We have the legal factors, and regulatory bodies to cover first.
